Texting & Driving Laws in the State of Utah
It’s easier to stay connected on the go these days with all the advanced technologies in advanced models like the new Acura MDX and Acura RDX, but how can you be sure you’re staying safe and following the laws in Salt Lake City and South Jordan? That’s where the team at Mike Hale Acura in Murray comes in with this helpful guide to the distracted driving laws for texting and driving in Utah.
Vehicle Crashes from Distracted Driving
In 2016, nearly 10 percent of automobile accidents were caused by distracted driving, and it leads to dozens of preventable deaths every year. That’s why Utah has implemented important distracted driving laws, which you should be careful to follow. Distracted driving can include talking to a passenger, eating, and drinking, but the distracted driving laws are limited to:
- No texting and driving
- No use of a handheld cell phone while driving
For normal offenses of texting or use of a handheld cell phone while driving, you could be looking at a fee of up to $750 and up to three months in jail. If a death or injury is the result of the offense, fines of up to $10,000 and up to 15 years in prison are possible for this felony offense.
Hands-Free Calling
This doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected on the go, though. These days, many new Acura models come with standard Bluetooth® hands-free calling and audio connectivity. Many of these devices allow you to place a phone call, receive and send SMS messages, and even put in navigation directions with the use of your voice—all of which is legal in Utah.
